The second of three “Friday Nights” celebrating the work of Janet Delaney, this evening offers a historical and contemporary perspective on the role of the arts in urban planning and public policy in San Francisco. Discussions across the museum will explore exemplary case studies, pivotal policy decisions, creative compromises, and new alternatives that affect the changing cultural life of the city.
Join the de Young Museum and the Arts Research Center for four unique interventions around the museum, exploring the formal and social concerns of photographers who have made San Francisco their object of attention, focusing on Delaney’s exhibition and considering its connection to a history of San Francisco photography.

As the current Director of the Arts Research Center, and the Richard and Rhoda Goldman Professor of Rhetoric and of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies, Shannon is uniquely qualified and positioned to develop and advance our aspirations in the realm of the Arts and Design.

On Friday March 13, ARC hosted the Questioning Aesthetics Symposium, where we invited a range of scholars and artists to help us think through three unique yet connected frames of “aesthetics,” asking: When is art participatory? When is computing aesthetic?

On Tuesday, January 13, The Arts Research Center was delighted to welcome Laura Callanan, the newly appointed Senior Deputy Chairman at the National Endowment for the Arts, for a salon conversation on Innovation, Entrepreneurship and the Arts with ARC Director Shannon Jackson.
