The second of three “Friday Nights” celebrating the work of Janet Delaney, this evening offers a historical and contemporary perspective on the role of the arts in urban planning and public policy in San Francisco. Discussions across the museum will explore exemplary case studies, pivotal policy decisions, creative compromises, and new alternatives that affect the changing cultural life of the city.

Participants will include Supervisor Jane Kim (San Francisco Board of Supervisors District 6), Jonathan Moscone (Chief of Civic Engagement at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts; Artistic Director at California Shakespeare Theater), Benjamin Grant (Urban Design Policy Director at SPUR), and Professor Karen Chapple (Professor of City and Regional Planning at UC Berkeley). This conversation will be moderated by UC Berkeley Professor Shannon Jackson, Director of the Arts Research Center.
“Sustaining the Arts” will feature a dozen organizations working to bring awareness to displacement issues being faced from residents, artists, and arts organizations across the city. Participants will include First Exposures, Bay Area Society for Art and Activism, Sixth Street Photography Workshop,Southern Exposure, Common Field, SF Camerawork, Shaping San Francisco/FoundSF.org, ARTSPAN, San Francisco Arts Commission,Market Street Prototyping Festival, and SPUR.
Music from the 1970s and 1980s will be played in the Wisley Court, accompanied by a slide show of the history of San Francisco in photographs.
