American roots music singer and songwriter Martha Redbone gestured to herself, “The twenty year-old me was not this. This right here is a product of mistakes and therapy.” Eighteen UC Berkeley students, ranging from undergraduates to PhD candidates, listened to Redbone attentively. Their chairs formed a semicircle, gathered for a songwriting workshop offered by Redbone and her longtime collaborator and bandmate Aaron Whitby.

On November 15th, ARC hosted a zine-making workshop facilitated by Sierra Edd, that was open to both experienced and beginner zinesters of UC Berkeley. The workshop featured a step-by-step guided zine making tutorial and also offered a brief background to zine making and Indigenous storytelling through zines. Participants included undergraduate and graduate students, staff, and faculty from across campus.

On October 14th, ARC presented the Internet Tour with the Berkeley Center for New Media (BCNM), led by Alex Saum-Pascual, Poet and Assoc Professor of Contemporary Spanish Literature and New Media, and created with Mario Santamaría, Visual Artist and Lecturer, BAU, College of Arts and Design of Barcelona.

On October 10th, ARC hosted the first Loft Hour event of the 2024/25 academic year with the support of the Dean’s Office of the Division of Arts and Humanities. The program featured readings by Tehmina Khan (College Writing Program) and Fae Myenne Ng (Ethnic Studies) in conversation with Natalia Brizuela (Film & Media).

On September 5th, ARC partnered with the Lunch Poems series to co-present their first event of the Fall 2024 school year. Sherwin Bitsui, a Diné (Navajo) writer, poet, and Professor of English at Northern Arizona University, presented work from his three collections of poetry, Dissolve, Flood Song, and Shapeshift, along with new work from his upcoming manuscript in a poetry reading at UC Berkeley’s Morrison Library.
