Open Rehearsal | Artists-in-Residence

Over the next three years, the ARC will welcome artists who consider their making a mode of thought, and scholars whose thinking emerges from a practice, all experimenting with what research can look like when it is made rather than written.

Each residency is shaped with the artist, following where their work and interests lead, unfolding across performances, workshops, and conversations on process. Residents return over three years, part of a shared project that holds them in each other's orbit and in that of practitioners across campus. In 2029, a festival gathers the AIRs, working groups, and the wider communities.

Steffani Jemison | Oct 28 - Nov 2, 2026

In collaboration with BAMPFA

Steffani Jemison is an interdisciplinary artist and writer. In dialogue with interlocutors (living and ancestral), her work connects mark-making, gesture, projection, movement, and document.

Jessie Cox | April 6-7, 2027

Jessie Cox is a composer, drummer, and scholar. His first monograph, Sounds of Black Switzerland: Blackness, Music, and Unthought Voices (Duke UP, 2025), explores how experimental musical practices and thinking with Blackness open alternative ways of worlding.

Imani Mason Jordan | April 26-29, 2027

Imani Mason Jordan is an interdisciplinary writer, editor, artist and curator interested in performance and poetics. Their doctoral research focuses on racial capitalism and carceral logics through the work of Stuart Hall.

Jasper Marsalis | Dates TBA

Jasper Marsalis works across painting, sculpture, music and text to elaborate a parallel between the space of the artwork and a performer on stage, both of which entail an experience of being consumed by audiences.
