ARC Internships

Berkeley Arts Connectimage 3

Working with the Berkeley Arts Connect program, ARC places Cal students in nine month fund development, communications, and marketing internships with one of ten Berkeley-based arts organizations. Interns gain firsthand experience in nonprofit management, as well as invaluable connections with some of the Bay Area’s premiere arts organizations. Berkeley Arts Connect is a collaborative partnership of ARC and the Berkeley Cultural Trust.

The Berkeley Arts Connect Program addresses the following issues:

  • A need for more significant partnerships between the campus, Cal students and the Berkeley arts community. With the relocation of the Magnes Collection and the Berkeley Art Museum to downtown Berkeley, UC Berkeley is strengthening its role as part of the city’s arts community and as a partner in making Berkeley a true “art city”. Building on that momentum, Berkeley Arts Connect will help develop a network between the campus and many different arts organizations, as well as help develop relationships between members of the Berkeley Cultural Trust (BCT).
  • Nonprofits need more administrative support and professional development opportunities for their staff. Student interns will be selected and trained to support an organization’s marketing and/or fund development efforts, needs that have been identified by BCT members. Additionally, all BCT members will be invited to attend professional development trainings planned for the interns (including skills training by trainers from organizations like CompassPoint) as well as to attend the seminars coordinated by the Arts Research Center. These strategies will not only increase capacity at the arts organizations, but also will serve to continue to bring together BCT members throughout the year.
  • Both emerging and established arts professionals need to think critically and expansively about the role of the arts in civic life. Through cohort discussions and seminars, interns and the staff with whom they are working will have opportunities to step back from the pressures of day-to-day operations and consider “big picture” issues of place, audience, and community.
