Note from the Director

Depending on the circumstances, a four-year term can feel painfully long (politics) or surprisingly short (an undergraduate degree). Eva Whitney Fund for the Arts

The Arts Research Center is honored to announce the Eva Whitney Fund for the Arts, in commemoration of UC Berkeley alum and ARC student assistant Eva Whitney (Comparative Literature 2024).

Born and raised in San Francisco, Eva was a prolific artist across disciplines. She attended Ruth Asawa School of the Arts for creative writing and was immersed in the Bay Area art scene her entire life. Fumi Okiji appointed as new Director of the Arts Research Center

The Division of Arts & Humanities at UC Berkeley is pleased to announce Fumi Okiji as the new Director of the Arts Research Center (ARC), starting July 1, 2026.

Okiji is a performer and theorist whose work moves across Black studies, critical theory, and sound and music studies. Her first book, Jazz as Critique: Adorno and Black Expression Revisited (Stanford, 2018), reconsiders the critical potential of art through an encounter between Theodor Adorno and traditions of Black creative music.
