Charles Altieri

Job title:
Fellow and Professor Emeritus at UC Berkeley
Bio/CV:

Charles Altieri is a primary co-founder of the Arts Research Center and was an ARC Fellow in Spring 2011– he was chosen in the Faculty Fellow category.

Charles Altieri has been primarily interested in the varieties of Twentieth Century American poetry, especially in relation to philosophy and to the visual arts. He also recently wrote a book on the affects and that shapes his thinking on most topics. But he is in transition. Altieri has been teaching Shakespeare and Hegel and will teach the epic because he wants a grand stage on which to figure out what he can say about affect in literature. He is also working on book introducing ways of thinking about modern American poetry.

Charles Altieri retired from UC Berkeley on July 1, 2021 after 53 years of university teaching.  He has written several books on 20th century American Poetry and Literary Theory, along with over 200 essays, at least two of which were on Lyn Hejinian. And he shows up as a named character in two of her books. As is evident in his essay, he and Lyn team-taught twice and shared several students.
