Ph.D. Candidate Needed for BAMPFA Exhibition Brochure

bampfaThe University of California, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA) is seeking a qualified PhD candidate from the History of Art Department or Rhetoric Department (contemporary art focus) to write the brochure text for The 46th Annual University of California, Berkeley Master of Fine Arts Graduate Exhibition. The selected author will write informative and engaging texts on each of the graduating artists’ works (approximately 250 words each). The texts should balance description and analysis, be free of jargon, and articulate how the artist’s work contributes to broad dialogues within the field of contemporary art. The texts will be included in the illustrated brochure available in the BAMPFA galleries during the exhibition (June 29 – August 7, 2016).

The selected author will need to be available for a full day of studio visits with the MFA artists in February and will be responsible for follow-up consultations with the artists and exhibition curator. An initial draft will be due to the curator and editor on March 28, with the final draft due on April 4. The candidate must be available via email during the editing process (the weeks of April 4 and 11). The selected author is expected to follow the BAMPFA Editorial Style Guide, which we will provide. BAMPFA retains final editorial and design approval rights on all published materials. The selected author will be paid a flat fee of $800 after the receipt and approval of the final draft.

To apply, please send a cover letter (including your area of research), your CV, and two essay excerpts or finished writing samples (no more that two pages each) to the exhibition curator Lauren O’Connell, lroconnell@berkeley.edu, by December 10, 2015.
